Alzheimer’s & CJD concerns

*Dentistry in the News*

Many of our patients have been asking about the recent concerns published regarding Alzheimer’s Disease and dental treatment. The basis of this concern is the transmission of amyloid seeds through medical and dental procedures, in particular Root Canal Treatment, as these seeds may adhere to minute metal surfaces.

Cornelscourt Dental are aware of these concerns and following research published about the potential link between prion transmission in nervous tissue and risk of CJD in the 1990s, we have adhered to strict cross-infection policies.

We are committed to the highest standard of care for our patients. This includes using single use root canal files, which are discarded once the root canal treatment is complete. While this makes the treatment slightly more costly, it ensures strict cross-infection standards, as the prion implicated in these disease is not killed by normal sterilisation. By following this protocol we can reassure our patients of their safety during treatment.
